Termites and Termite Treatment FAQs

What happens if you do not perform regular termite inspections?

Once termites find their way into your home, they will quietly look for wood in different areas of the property. Little engineers that they are, they usually stop feeding if they feel the wood may collapse anytime soon. Therefore, some unlucky household owners will first notice the damage when they move the furniture around. Termite alates (future termite kings and queens) can also fly to the roof cavity and start their nest up there. In that kind of scenario, discovering them is quite tough and not as quick until they descend from the roof cavity and start eating through wood there. Regular termite inspections by qualified inspectors will help avoid nasty surprises of termite damages. Australian Standard recommends termite inspection at least once a year. But in some cases where are a few conducive environment for termite infestations, we highly recommend termite inspections even more often.

What are first signs of termites in your home?

Mud tunnels and wood damage are usually the first signs of termites. When those termite signs appear, don’t be surprised, as they can already be everywhere! Termite workers and soldiers don’t have eyes. So, to avoid being seen by predators, they will eat through the wood or build a mud tunnel where ants can’t penetrate easily. Those mud tunnels are their giveaway sign. More often than not, their mud work is also hidden. For example, in the corner under the carpet, under the sink, behind the cupboard, etc. Professional termite inspectors are trained to thoroughly search for those concealed places. Therefore, it is important to allow them to do the regular termite inspections.

How long does it take to get rid of termites?

Getting rid of termites is by no means a simple process. A good termite controller has to identify few facts, such as the termite species, number of leads, and places to treat termite before deciding what type of treatment he is going to use. Treatment time depends on some factors, such as the size of the colony, type of species, time of the year, and method of treatment. Two months is a very rough estimate time of the termite colony eradication. If termite baiting method is applied, termites usually prefer it to wood; therefore, the damage during termite treatment is reduced significantly. Obviously, the sooner we discover termite infestations, the lesser damage they will bring. With that in thought, constant termite inspection is the answer to eliminate termites fast.
